Patamu Lodge Karatu

Patamu Lodge Karatu is a mid–range lodging facility in Karatu, just 15 minutes drive from the Ngorongoro conservation area in Northern Tanzania. The lodge is encircled by verdant terrain, with undulating hills extending to the coffee cultivation regions of Oldeani, the garden, and the Ngorongoro wilderness. The journey from Arusha to Lake Manyara involves an average 3-4 hour drive via a tarmac road via Mayukuni and Karatu, or a 45-minute flight to the nearby airfield, followed by a brief transport to the lodge. The lodge is conveniently situated and caters to business travelers, tourists, and vacationers seeking to explore the breathtaking vistas of the three national parks: Ngorongoro, Lake Manyara, and Tarangire National Park.

Patamu Lodge Karatu comprises six expansive and pleasant rooms, each featuring queen-sized beds and views of the tropical gardens, created in an African style with a high level of comfort. The rooms are elegantly decorated and equipped with private en suite facilities, including flushing toilets, bathrooms with solar-heated hot and cold showers, mosquito nets, comfortable tropical wooden beds with clean linens, complimentary bottled water, toiletries, chairs, tables, and slippers, among other amenities. Rooms feature individual balconies, verandas, and sitting rooms, allowing for relaxation while appreciating the breathtaking views of the verdant gardens, Ngorongoro forest, and the surrounding landscape. A crackling campfire pit allows guests to unwind and exchange safari experiences while offering warmth during the nights. The Ngorongoro Crater is located in the northern region of Tanzania, adjacent to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area within the Great Rift Valley, encompassing a total area of 8,292 square kilometers and is approximately 3 million years old. The crater is the premier location in East Africa, offering stunning and spectacular vistas.

The park features various attractions, including the wildebeest migration from the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater, the Salei Plains, and the Olkarien Gorge, among diverse flora and fauna, breathtaking landscapes, and numerous additional points of interest. The park offers many levels of lodging, including budget, mid-range, and luxury options, which are handy and reasonable for people visiting the area. The park features short grasses, elevated terrain, and other stunning volcanoes. The area is home to about 25,000 large species, including 26 black rhinoceroses, more than 100 lions, 7,000 wildebeests, 4,000 zebras, 3,000 elands, and 3,000 Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelles.

The park features various animals, including the Big Five mammals: lion, buffalo, elephant, leopard, and rhinoceros, as well as zebras, impalas, antelopes, and diverse bird species. Numerous diverse activities are available in the park, including game viewing at the crater and Lake Eyasi viewpoint to observe migrating animals, crater viewing, cultural visits to the local village, hiking in the Gol Mountains in the park’s remote areas, crater rim nature walks, bird watching, visiting archaeological sites such as the Olduvai Gorge Museum, and various other activities.

The Park offers a breathtaking perspective of the Ngorongoro Crater, the largest caldera in the world, together with its surrounding regions. There is a greater population of Maasai Mara pastoralists in Ngorongoro Park. June, July, and late January through February are the optimal months for a safari in Tanzania, particularly on the Ngorongoro side.
